Trader Joe's sells a great root beer called Virgil's Root Beer, and it got me off of Mug's & A&W forever. I still occasionally drink Barq's, but that's about once a year.

We have a local Trader Joe's, which is where I get my port. I'll give it a try.

Well,I saw him as Sheridan Whiteside in The Man Who Came To Dinner in Chicago. Good performance. Happy belated birthday to Mr. John Mahoney. Were you gentlemen aware that Mr. Mahoney, though he's lived in Chicago for most of his adult life hails from Manchester? I was floored when I learned this, because he speaks Chicago every bit as well as fellow Steppenwolfers Malkovich, Sinese & Petersen. He confessed, rather sheepishly, in an interview, when pressed for what he misses about 'back home in England', which he visits now very rarely--'the food'. Maybe you can take the boy out of Manchester but not Manchester out of the boy?
It must have been in the manner of an inside joke that Martin Crane's in-home health aide Daphne was Mancunian. Daphne talks the way John used to, until he was 19, 20 years old, after which he effortlessly became a Chicagoan.

When I lived in Chicago, I had the good fortune to see a number of the Chicago actors like Mahoney and Joan Cusack on stage. Unfortunately, I never did see William Petersen.
Chicago still has, I think, the most interesting theater scene in the US.

I'm gonna go find a header to use as my avatar. I do have some ideas on what I would want--one idea in particular involves either a favorite character from a favorite show, movie or video game. Another is an avatar for one of my favorite animals--both real and mythical.
And for the record, I am a cat person, though I am also very fond of dragons. So of course I'm gonna have some appreciation for what I like to refer to as dragon flicks, if nothing else but as guilty pleasures. How to Train Your Dragon, Dragonheart, Reign of Fire, Dragonslayer, you name it. While cats get...Nine...Lives...and The Aristocats...man, where's Woody Allen when you need him?

To create an avatar, got to profile and edit profile. You can do it from there. It also has, I think, instructions for uploading a photo as a avatar.
To insert a photo into a post, hit reply. There are buttons at the top of the "create post" page that allow you to upload or link to a photo.

My next door neighbor for two months has been selling drugs--the noise of his clients beating on his door from 10pm to 5am has made getting sleep a problem. Finally he was evicted and for a couple of days it was quiet. Then the noises started again. There were squatters using the apartment. Sunday was the end. I was in the kitchen fixing breakfast when there was a concussion that shook the kitchen window. I thought a car had hit the building. I went to the door and outside were two large, well one was extra large-and the XL was literally throwing her body at the door like you would see in the movies. I stood in my doorway, not saying anything and finally she gave up, giving me the evil eye and saying a word that started with "mother". Then they got on their bicycles and rode away. Monday the locks were changed and last night, ah, sweet sleep! And I did mention the movies in this post, HA!

Gee, your neighborhood sounds about as quality as mine! I love the last bit about how these two XL BAMFs rode away on their 'bicycles'. LOL
I know some shady drug deals happen in the alleyway next door to my house. It's a busy cut-through between two streets and the block behind me has a number of nefarious characters. There are always cars pulling in, pulling out, lingering conversations by the curbside, things passed, etc. I see all this from the front row seat of my porch but I try not to actually 'see' it, if you get me.
The more disturbing thing is the young couple who lives in the house next door with their young son, aged 5. It's constant domestic disturbance over there, yelling and carrying on, which I can hear from my house even with all their windows closed. If they aren't screaming at each other, they are screaming at the child, liberally dosed with profanities. Daddy had serious rage issues, even though he is by my estimation, 5'4", 125 pounds, tops. I feel very sorry for the kid. I have wondered what it my duty as a neighbor to intervene, but I know from my sister's experiences foster-parenting children of severe abuse and neglect that simply being yelled at daily is not a sufficient reason to have the child removed from his parents' custody. They dress him and feed him; he seems clean and I have never witnessed physical violence. Only the yelling. He's an incredibly lonely little boy. I certainly hope they don't have another child, because I would worry about an infant over there.

Apologies to all for my absence. I had a boot drive crash, and it has taken a bit of time to get everything up and running again. Fortunately, I had a nearly complete backup.

Hikari: At the last apartments I lived in there was a couple who acted the same way. The last time I saw them he was screaming at her, trying to pull his young daughter out of her arms. I had my phone ready to call if he hit his wife. She got away and managed to get her and her daughter, probably 4 years old, into the car and locked the doors. He started kicking the hell out of his/her car putting dents in it and I thought, oh boy, if you guys make up are you really going to be mad about what you did to your car. Apparently others who lived closer in the apartment complex complained and they were out of there within a week.
This morning (Friday the 14th) I went for my morning walk really early due to the horrible heat we have here. I left a bit after 3am and at the end of my walk cut through the apartment parking lot to get at my mail box. As I approached the mailbox I heard this howling, wailing noise--and assumed it was teen agers raising hell. I got my mail, turned around and there is a naked little black boy looking up at me with big, frightened eyes. Oh boy. I do not have a cell phone, it is about 330am and so I tell the little boy to follow me we would find someone to help. I finally saw an apartment with the light on and knocked on the door, woke up a young couple who called the cops. I left then, I was covered in drying sweat and was starting to stiffen up but I left them with my apartment number as I knew the cops would want to talk to me. Already I am worried. A nightmare could be developing for me. If this kid was molested, guess who is going to be the suspect? The cops showed up at my door about an hour later and I told them what I knew--plus I had been thinking about the situation and I had walked nearly the same time the day before and coming by the parking lot of the apartments next door I had seen a small child, way down at the end, walking, stopping to look back as though someone has called it's name. I believe that this is the same child. Most likely I will not have any trouble--but while I should be proud and happy to have helped out this child, what I am is worried--which is indicative of what our society has come to.

I think the Amazon forums have shut down early. There is a message on each thread saying they are shutting down the 6th but you cannot post on any where. At least I couldn't. Rotten creeps!

Yes, Amazon locked the forums on October 3. Tacky, to say the least.
