For those of you wondering where I have been and why I have not been reviewing movies much lately, it's because my interests have changed. Granted, I am planning a top 100 greatest movies of all time review marathon in the foreseeable future, but for now, it is high time my interests shift somewhere productive.
I am now in the process of finally getting around to writing my book. Specifically a fantasy series all of its own. The name of this series is The Zion Project. The title of the first book will be The Slayer of Dragons. It will be 12 chapters long of varying length--each chapter encompassing the important details of each year in the life of the main character, Kibo--starting with age 10--whose long term memories have been deteriorating at an increasingly rapid rate. And in an increasingly dangerous war-torn city of Lazarus ravaged by crime, poverty, and the increasingly dangerous presence of dragons, Kibo spends the remainder of his childhood and teenage years conditioning himself for the sole purpose of survival. Not only in the presence of mind of killing or be killed instinctually, but the developing of a tactical and cerebral mind. As his fascination and respect for the mighty dragons increases, his humanity begins to dwindle and fade away alongside his humanity. And as he becomes a more efficient killer with a survivalist bent, his home life with his father and brother escalates to dysfunction and may shape the future of all their lives forever.
He also learns of the mysterious powers that emit from these dragons, and becomes aware of the means of which they can unlock their full power--the once excommunicated military might of the Dragon Riders. And it is with this desire to pursue the mysteries of the dragons and Dragon Riders that he eventually finds himself amidst a life-or-death conflict conflict between an army of dragons and the military unit known as the Archangels.
I might need to do a better job writing the summary, but a general idea is that The Slayer of Dragons will basically be the fantasy equivalent of Blade Runner, about a young man who tosses aside his basic emotional connection to his own humanity in favor of his survival. As such, it is tonally drastic from the rest of the series that will follow, which without giving anything significant away, will involve Kibo reclaiming his humanity. It's also going to be paced differently; it will follow the First-Person POV rather than the Omniscient POV in the rest of the series; and it's a modestly short book with a modest scale compared to the sprawling epic that would soon follow.
As such, it's more of a prelude to the series rather an actual first entry. It's more of a dark, gritty character study with a futuristic fantasy gloss attached to it. Although there will be an epic climatic final battle in it. The one concern I have with it is the potential for this story to reek with nihilism. If it gets too far down that road, I may choose to scrap it in favor of where I originally planned to begin this series. It's more a fantasy series about character and theme rather than ground-up world building anyways--though to be fair, character and theme can indeed go a long way when it comes to world building.
